>> Saturday, 30 July 2011

Samsung's Galaxy S II smartphone hasn't launched here in the US yet but the Android-based phone is selling like gangbusters over in Europe, Japan and Samsung's home base of Korea. News.com reports that according to a Samsung statement the phone has now sold over 5 million units worldwide in just 85 days. The Galaxy S II is just entering the Chinese market this week which will likely see an increase in sales.

The Galaxy S II, based on Google's Android 2.3 operating system, has a number of impressive hardware features including a large 4.3 inch screen, a dual-core processor with speeds of 1.2 GHz, an eight megapixel camera in the back, a two megapixel camera in the front for video chat and more. The high sales of the Galaxy S II may have lead Samsung to sell a total of between 18 million and 21 million smartphone units in the quarter that ended on June 30.

The United States will soon be able to get Galaxy S II fairly soon. The smartphone is scheduled to be made available from Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint sometime in August. All three wireless carriers will give the phone a different name. Verizon Wireless will call the phone the Samsung Function,  AT&T will name it the Samsung Attain and Sprint will put the Samsung Within label on the phone. So far there's no word on what the pricing will be like for the various versions of the Galaxy S II.
